Asthma Clinical Pathway – Inpatient

Respiratory Assessment Criteria

Mild	Mild/minimal work of breathing Respiratory rate: normal for age Wheeze: intermittent expiratory to none No prolonged expiration Cough: full, loose and productive SpO₂ ≥ 90% on FIO₂ 21%
Moderate	Moderate work of breathing, accessory muscle use, and nasal flaring Respiratory rate: moderately increased for age Wheeze: moderate persistent expiratory No prolonged expiration Cough: loose and productive Management of FiO₂ and SpO₂ for SpO2 < 90%
Severe	Significant work of breathing, accessory muscle use, and nasal flaring Respiratory rate: significantly increased for age Wheeze: absent, severe inspiratory and/or expiratory Aeration: decreased throughout lung fields Prolonged expiration Cough: weak or absent Management of FiO₂ and SpO₂ for SpO₂ < 90%
