Respiratory Assessment Criteria

Mild
  • Mild/minimal work of breathing
  • Respiratory rate: normal for age
  • Wheeze: intermittent expiratory to none
  • No prolonged expiration
  • Cough: full, loose and productive
  • SpO2 ≥ 90% on FIO2 21%
Moderate
  • Moderate work of breathing, accessory muscle use, and nasal flaring
  • Respiratory rate: moderately increased for age
  • Wheeze: moderate persistent expiratory
  • No prolonged expiration
  • Cough: loose and productive
  • Management of FiO2 and SpO2 for SpO2 < 90%
Severe
  • Significant work of breathing, accessory muscle use, and nasal flaring
  • Respiratory rate: significantly increased for age
  • Wheeze: absent, severe inspiratory and/or expiratory
  • Aeration: decreased throughout lung fields
  • Prolonged expiration
  • Cough: weak or absent
  • Management of FiO2 and SpO2 for SpO2 < 90%
