Sickle Cell Disease with Fever Clinical Pathway – Emergency Department

Sickle Cell Disease and Fever

This pathway guides the care for children > 2 mos of age with SS, SC, or Sβ-thalassemia type sickle cell disease who present to the ED with a temperature ≥ 38.3°C or history of temperature ≥ 38.3°C within 48 hrs of presentation.

Note

  • The definition of fever has not been rigorously studied in SCD, thus a strict cut-off cannot be used to determine the risk of serious bacterial infection.
  • For inpatients with SCD a fever is defined as a temperature > 38.5°C (101.3°F) or > 38°C (100.4°F) on 3 separate occasions within 24 hrs.
