New Asthma Symptoms in Inpatient Setting

  1. Consider alternative diagnosis
  2. Assess severity based on respiratory assessment criteria
  3. Treat with the following based upon severity assessment:
    • Mild: 2 puffs albuterol
    • Moderate: Weight-based albuterol and dexamethasone or prednisone
    • Severe: Continuous albuterol and dexamethasone or prednisone +/- a one-time ipratropium nebulizer treatment
  4. Based on response, initiate appropriate inpatient asthma pathway
